It’s not much and doesn’t address the systemic failures of our society. But it’s helped a few kids who don’t have pencils or backpacks. And it took a little burden of the backs of teachers, who are not paid what they are worth. I teach dominican immigrant kids. I am an immigrant like them.

For a long time now I’ve come to believe that the best way to improve schools is to work to end poverty. There is no stronger correlation in education than the one between poverty and poor performance. When I was in fifth grade I had a teacher who completely changed my life. I think he knew there was trouble at home. He was a great teacher who encouraged me to work hard, and to believe in myself. I still think of him all of these years later.
