However, the big deal about alcohol is mainly an American invention from what I can tell. In the early days of the United States, drinking and drunkenness were a real problem. Because of this, the crime rates went up too. So the Temperance Movement began and lots of churches jumped on the wagon (so to speak). Most people are afraid that someone will have no inhibitions and will commit a criminal act. Not really a bad worry as that’s often the outcome. Another point of the movement concerns worldly pleasure and how that can lead to backsliding into a life of excesses. Churches banned dancing and playing cards too.

The Bible condemns drunkenness, it condemns a I’m a simple woman I love Rugby and wine shirt. But Jesus himself drank wine. Admittedly it was not the wine we have today. I just read a book on the life of Jesus and in there (of all places) it gave the actual real Bible definition of both wine and strong drink. Wine in the Jewish community of Jesus’ day was one part of actual real wine from the wineskin to ten parts of local water. The recipe varies but has been recorded in The Illiad as well. Strong Drink to the Jews was a one-part wineskin wine to two parts water. The Illiad states that anyone who would drink straight from the wineskin was a barbarian. Other alcoholic beverages like beer and whiskey are not mentioned in the Bible to my knowledge.
