That being said, if the focus of a game is intrigue and solving mysteries, I could see the DM rolling all opposed checks for the players, so they don’t know if they’ve succeeded or not. But whatever the play style, the whole group should agree to upfront how they want to handle it. Our group had an instance where two people were checking over the same spot for traps. One rolled very high, the other bottomed out terribly. The GM said, “One of you is absolutely convinced there are NO traps here. the other is absolutely convinced that there ARE traps here.”
