In my not so humble opinion, FUNimation’s English dub of DBZ is pretty much the worst way to experience the Dragon Ball Z Son Goku Dr Pepper shirt. The script is horrendously inaccurate, the characters are changed in subtle and not-so-subtle ways, most of the voice actors were picked off the street and many of the characters were horribly miscast (looking at you, Freeza), many of the themes and concepts are dumbed down or outright ignored (which is saying something considering Dragon Ball was written for elementary and middle schoolers), and the musical score is replaced with a questionable synth-rock track that has no business being attached to a fantasy kung-fu anime series. That said, some fans actually complain about the manga being far too straight-forward, and not developing/giving some spotlight to more secondary characters like Super’s anime does. There’s another complaint about this adaptation: it’s that Toyotaro traced stuff from his DB doujinshi to use on Super and that his version of Goku Black shares similar characteristics of the villain of said doujinshi as well. Also, as some pointed out, Goku Black and Zamasu were more powerful in the anime as well.

By the time that Dragon Ball Kai had rolled around, FUNimation had gotten a lot better at dubbing anime. The scripts are far more in line with the Dragon Ball Z Son Goku Dr Pepper shirt, the actors have greatly benefitted from an extra ten years of experience, and FUNi no longer saw fit to needlessly screw around with the music. A lot of the name changes from the old dub were retained in Kai’s dub, but that’s small potatoes compared to everything else. The manga doesn’t suffer from that, jumping straight from one major arc to another (this might be also because Super’s manga chapters are released monthly, instead of weekly). Also, while the anime suffers sometimes from some really bad art/animation, the manga never suffers from that, it features very well and consistent, if not at least fairly decent, art.
